In contrast, the Arab emirate Qatar looks straight ahead and into a bright future. Their emir who rules the country as an absolute monarch has far reaching ideas of the blessings of modernity he will bestow on his people until 2030. The islamic gulf state Qatar has paid many millions to the FIFA in order to be awarded the World Championship of soccer (2022) and is suspected at the same time to have invested some of the billions they have been generated through the oil industry into bolstering islamic terrorist commandos. With their “Vision 2030”, they pretend to be modern and social, devoloping the authoritative oil state to an information society. For "Waiting for Qatar", Gregor Schmidt has traveled to this country on the Persian Gulf. His photographs portray power and ambition, the Arab penchant for racing horses and everything that carries prestige, yet they also invoke guest workers and large-scale military parades.own.
