Von nichts kommt nichts, könnte das Motto von Alwin Lay sein, oder: Es passiert nicht immer, was geschehen müsste, aber doch jede Menge. "mod. CLASSIC" ist der Name einer Espressomaschine, die die italienische Firma Gaggia Ende der 1970iger Jahre auf den Markt brachte. Lay hat sich den Titel geborgt, denn bei ihm wird die Espressomaschine zum Sinnbild seines Schaffens. Eingebaut in eine durchsichtige Vitrine ertrinkt die "mod. CLASSIC" in ihrem eigenen Espresso. Übrig bleibt ein schwarzer Kubus mit kräftig Crema obenauf und ein Büchlein, eine gefakte Bedienungsanleitung der Gaggia, die das "Ertrinken" der Maschine dokumentiert. Die ebenso ästhetische wie verkäuferische Präsentation der Maschine wird, alleine durch die Produktion des Cafes, ihrer Funktion enthoben und löscht so das Bild aus, das wir von ihr haben. Das Nicht-Erfüllen von Erwartungen, das Nicht-Einlösen tradierter Handlungs- und Sehmuster ist das Thema von Alwin Lay. Ob skulptural, fotografisch oder in Videos umgesetzt, immer überrascht er den Betrachter auf eine sinnige, humorvolle Art und Weise, eben ganz "mod. CLASSIC"-mäßig.

"You can’t make something out of nothing." This could be Alwin Lay’s motto. Or else: It is rare that what is supposed to happen actually happens, but there still happens a lot. "mod. CLASSIC" is the name of a portafilter espresso machine that was produced by the well-known italian firm Gaggia in the 1970’s. Lay has borrowed that name, because for him this espresso machine becomes the symbol of his creative work. Built into a transparent showcase, the "mod. CLASSIC" drowns in its own espresso. What remains is a black cube with some hefty crema on top and a little book — a faked users manual that documents the "drowning" of the machine in images. The presentation of the machine — aesthetic and promotional — is overwritten by its own activity, the production of coffee. It loses its function and erases the image that we have of it. This non-fulfillment of expectations, the dishonoring of handed down action patterns and viewing habits, is at the core of Alwin Lay’s work. Be it in installations, sculptures, photographs or in videos, again and again, he surprises the viewer in a witty and humorous way — "mod. CLASSIC" one might say.
